Flint Country: A Stone Journey

Published in July 2025 by Saraband, my most recent book is both a natural and cultural history of the stone as well as a celebration of the landscapes in which it is found. Largely but not exclusively East Anglia-based, it takes a sideways look at flint from a number of perspectives – geological, archaeological, architectural, historical, philosophical and artistic.

Westering

This was published by Saraband in 2021. Beginning in Great Yarmouth in Norfolk and meandering to Aberystwyth on the coast of Wales, Westering is a coast-to-coast journey on foot that connects landscape, place and memory to evoke a narrative unravelling the deep topography.

Norfolk (Slow Travel) 3rd edition

This is the most recent edition of my Norfolk guide for Bradt.
As the publisher’s website asserts: “Now in its 3rd edition, this updated Bradt Norfolk Guidebook, part of Bradt’s award-winning ‘Slow travel’ series of guides to UK regions, turns the spotlight on this county of contrasts, from the fine city of Norwich to the watery wilderness of the Broads and the sweeping beaches of the superlative north coast.”

Kyrgyzstan (Bradt travel guide) 4th edition

“This updated Bradt Kyrgyzstan guidebook, now in a 4th edition, remains the only English-language guide dedicated solely to this astounding country, described as ‘the Switzerland of central Asia’ and regarded by many as the most beautiful country in the world.
Deep within central Asia, Kyrgyzstan’s beautiful mountainscapes, dreamlike rock formations and semi-nomadic culture are gloriously unspoiled. A trip here can be as adventurous as you please: admire 5,000-year-old petroglyphs at Saimaluu-Tash, gallop on horseback through the alpine meadows that surround 3,016m-high Lake Song-Köl, go trekking in the mountain valleys that lie south of Karakol, visit Bishkek’s Soviet-era statues or simply laze on the shores of the vast Lake Issyk-Kul.”
